This wonderful tour for Gentleman Jack fans offers an insight into the time Anne Lister spent in York. The BBC TV series Gentleman Jack, starring Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle, sparked a huge amount of interest in the life of landowner, businesswoman, mountaineer and diarist Anne Lister and we are delighted to be offering this fascinating tour of York which covers  a number  of the locations Anne frequented in York. The itinerary covers much of the city, the church where Anne and Ann Walker took communion to seal their relationship, parts of the famous city walls and also the river.

We are delighted to have secured the services of Rachel Whitbread as our guide. Rachel spent time in York in the 80s researching Anne Lister for her mother Helena whose books have been key in keeping Anne Lister’s legacy alive. Rachel has transcribed Anne Lister’s code for various projects and been involved in many events and conversations with Helena and other Anne Lister scholars over the past 30 years. We are so pleased to have her share her passion for this fascinating woman.

The walk is 2.5 to 3 miles and is graded as leisurely. It is mainly flat and on tarmac plus sections along the walls and river.
