Eyam Peak District: The Plague Village and the Dark / White Peak Moderate
£30.00
This guided walk from the plague village of Eyam covers a variety of terrain typical of both the Dark Peak and the White Peak. The walk begins in Dark Peak territory as we cross gritstone moors and walk through the fascinating Bretton Clough. As we emerge from the clough we approach the lighter limestone scenery of the White Peak with its small villages and typical criss-crossing of stone walls.
On our return there will be time to explore Eyam’s past. Eyam is well known for the part it played in the plague of 1665 when the people of the village self isolated in order to prevent the plague from spreading throughout the region and beyond. Clearly there are parallels to be drawn with the current pandemic.
Grade: Moderate. The walk is 8 miles long with 480m of ascent. A reasonable level of fitness is required. The terrain is a mixture of paths through moorland and fields with some walking on minor roads.
