Gentleman Jack – A Walk Around Anne Lister’s Shibden Dale
The BBC TV series Gentleman Jack, starring Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle, has sparked a huge amount of interest in the life of landowner, businesswoman, mountaineer and diarist Anne Lister and we are delighted to be offering this beautiful walk from her ancestral home, Shibden Hall after a visit to the hall itself.
Our walk will start at Shiben Hall itself and head northward along quiet lanes and a mixture of wooded and moorland paths to explore an area that Anne would have walked time and time again. It was well documented that she walked at a vigourous pace – ours will be a little more sedate! We hope to get some gorgeous views of the surrounding West Yorkshire countryside, with its myriad of stone walls, from the hills overlooking Shibden Dale. You may well recognise some of the scenery from the BBC series.
The walk is around 6 miles and is uphill for most of the early part followed by a descent back to the hall. (total ascent around 400m).
Before the walk, there will be time to visit Shibden Hall. Anne made many changes to the 15th century hall and many of its rooms appear in the BBC series.
The hall is about a mile from the centre of Halifax. There is a frequent bus service and parking on site. We will supply full details for both options.
Price includes a guided walk and entrance to Shibden Hall
