Gentleman Jack – Anne Lister in Halifax
The BBC TV series Gentleman Jack, starring Suranne Jones, has sparked a huge amount of interest in the life of landowner, businesswoman, mountaineer and diarist Anne Lister and we are delighted to be offering this fascinating insight into her life, exploring the places she frequented in Halifax.
Our three-hour walk around Halifax will look at sites Anne Lister knew well. We will view the house where she lived as a girl, the home of her tutor, locations where she courted women, the residence of her opponent Christopher Rawson – and much more!
We are delighted to have David Glover of Calderdale Heritage Walks as our guide for the walk. David is also president of Halifax Antiquarian Society and acting chair of Halifax Civic Trust and has a wealth of knowledge about Anne and Halifax itself.
The walk is around 3.5 miles with one steep ascent at the start. It is within Halifax and therefore on pavements throughout.
After the walk, you may wish to visit Anne’s ancestral home Shibden Hall (£5 not included).Anne made many changes to the 15th century hall and many of its rooms appear in the BBC series. The hall is about a mile from the centre of Halifax. There is a frequent bus service or you can walk up to the hall. We will supply full details for both options.
