Northumbria Explorer Grade: Leisurely
The Northumberland Coast is a designated Area of Outstanding Beauty, renowned for its miles of wonderful sandy beaches and and two national nature reserves. The area is steeped in history with its magnificent castles, priories and stately homes.
Based in Bamburgh, once the capital of Northumbria, some of our walks will take in some of the most dramatic parts of the coast, passing through little fishing villages, with magnificent views across the North Sea. We will spend a day on Lindisfarne (Holy Island) once home to St Cuthbert and the famous Lindisfarne Gospels. We will also visit Cragside with its dramatic landscaped grounds and the first house in the world to have electric lighting. In Alnwick we can visit the Castle – loved by Harry Potter fans, the beautiful Alnwick Gardens and the delightful Barter Bookshop. Weather permitting, when we walk to Seahouses, there is the option of a boat trip around the Farne Islands to see the grey seals. No visit to Bamburgh is complete without visiting the castle with its museum and magnificent state rooms.
