The Northumberland Coast is a designated Area of Outstanding Beauty, renowned for its miles of wonderful sandy beaches and and two national nature reserves. The area is steeped in history with its magnificent castles, priories and stately homes.

Based in Bamburgh, once the capital of Northumbria, some of our walks will take in some of the most dramatic parts of the coast, passing through little fishing villages, with magnificent views across the North Sea. We will spend a day on Lindisfarne (Holy Island) once home to St Cuthbert and the famous Lindisfarne Gospels. We will also visit Cragside with its dramatic landscaped grounds and the first house in the world to have electric lighting. In Alnwick we can visit the Castle – loved by Harry Potter fans, the beautiful Alnwick Gardens and the delightful Barter Bookshop. Weather permitting, when we walk to Seahouses, there is the option of a boat trip around the Farne Islands to see the grey seals. No visit to Bamburgh is complete without visiting the castle with its museum and magnificent state rooms.

Walking has long been a passion of mine. As well as enjoying the physical exercise, I love being outside, taking in the fresh air, wonderful views, observing birds and wildlife, and trying to identify the wild flowers and trees. I lead walks with a local walking group and have been guiding walking holidays for a number of years. Born in the Lake District and living most of my life in Northumberland, I particularly enjoy showing off these two wonderful areas to women who want to walk with other women and explore new places. I'm really looking forward to doing this with Her on a Hill.
This holiday has walks on 3 days with the longest being 5.5 miles. The other days involve walking combined with sightseeing. The walks are leisurely in nature with little ascent and there will be plenty of time for stops and taking in your surroundings.
By Public Transport. The nearest train stations are Alnmouth and Berwick. There is a good bus service serving Bamburgh which runs once an hour. Alternatively we will arrange a shared taxi (not included) from Berwick at 4.30pm. By Car Travelling northbound on the A1 turn off at Adderstone services and follow the B1341. Bamburgh is about 5 miles or you can take the B1342 if travelling southbound. Alternatively the B1340 coastal road takes you on a more leisurely route directly into Bamburgh. There is a small car park at the hotel.
