The Camino de Santiago is an internationally renowned walking trail with many route options from different starting points. Our chosen route covers the final 114 kilometres of the French Way through the delightful Galician hills from the lovely town of Sarria westwards to the city of Santiago de Compostela with its imposing cathedral. It is the most popular section of the trail and deservedly so. Being over 100km long, the route qualifies for the Compostela, a certificate issued to any walker who has completed at least 100km of the Way.

People walk the Camino for many different reasons and we will undoubtedly hear many stories along the way and meet many interesting people. One of the joys of walking a long-distance path is the sense of achievement and the camaraderie that a shared goal engenders so prepare to return home with new friends! Her on a Hill is offering this break as a walking holiday and those who wish to take part for spiritual reasons are most welcome.

Please note that your main luggage is transported to teh next location so that you only need to carry a day pack.

Itinerary (subject to change)

Day 1- Arrival in Sarria. Transfer from Santiago de Compostela airport to Sarria (1.5 hours). If flight times allow, you will have some free time to settle in before heading out to eat together (not included). There will be a short briefing this evening so that you know what to expect from your holiday.

Day 2- Sarria – Portomarín (22 Kms) Leaving Sarria and the remains of its castle, the first day of our trek will take us along country paths and roads passing through a number of beautiful Galician hamlets as we go. Many of the paths go through woodland which offers welcome shade. At Pena de Corvos we will enjoy some stunning panoramic views before starting our descent towards our final destination for today, Portomarin.  With a pretty square, lovely river and a cobbled main street, there is plenty of relaxation to be found here.

Day 3- Portomarín – Palas de Rei (25 Kms) The route from Portomarin starts as a steady climb up out of the village and continues on a small road through a beautiful rural landscape scattered with farmhouses and churches.  Palas de Rei is a small town and a lovely place to relax after our day of walking.

Day 4- Palas de Rei – Arzúa (28 Kms) Today is our longest walking day and we pass through many wonderful old villages reminiscent of times gone by. Our walk takes us through enchanting woodland, across lovely streams and ends in Arzua which is a larger town with a variety of shops and bars.

Day 5- Arzúa – Rúa (18 Kms) A shorter day which takes us through meadows, varied woodland, gorgeous hamlets and plenty of places to stop for refreshments.

Day 6- Rúa – Santiago de Compostela (21 Kms) Our day starts with a gradual incline which eventually leads to the top of Monte de Gozo . From here we have a panoramic view which includes our first glimpses of the city of Santiago de Compostela. From rural tracks we soon hit the outskirts of the city and head towards the magnificent cathedral, the centrepiece of the city and our ultimate destination. We will receive our trek certificate and then head to our hotel for a well-earned celebratory mea.l

Day 7 Option 1 Transfer to Santiago de Compostela airport for return flight

Day 7 Option 2 ( £85 supplement for single ensuite B&B) Free day in Santiago de Compostela to explore the city or perhaps attend the pilgrims’ mass at noon. Day 8 Transfer to Santiago de Compostela airport for return flight.

This section of the Camino involves only a few inclines, nothing too strenuous. However, the distance covered means that this is a moderate grade holiday. The shortest day is 18km /11 miles and the longest 28km/ 17.5 miles. We will take our time, stopping for breaks and lunch each day.
We will stay in a variety of lovely accommodation along the route. This may be in small family-run hotels, paradors or country homes. All rooms have a private bathroom.
The holiday is guided by Clare Kelly
There are direct flights to Santiago de Compostela from London Stansted. If you fly from other UK airports you will need to change. There will be one private transfer each way meeting certain flights and these will be confirmed once the Spring 2020 airline schedule has been announced which we expect to be in September 2019. Please do not book flights until the holiday is confirmed by Her on a Hill.
