Sennen West Cornwall: History and Rambling
£650.00
A fantastic opportunity to explore West Cornwall with Cornish resident, Helen. There is so much to see and we will be combining some gentle walking with a whole host of fascinating outings. We visit Mousehole with its fishing industry and lifeboat heritage; St Ives with, yes, more fishing and also lots of local art and artists; Sancreed with its ancient history; Geevor and Botallack with the remnants of a thriving tin mining industry and Penzance with a plethora of interesting places to visit. The trip will be facilitated by a host of local female guides who will share their passion for the area. As well as walking and sightseeing, we hope to take a short boat trip in order to enjoy Cornwall from a different perspective.
We are based in lovely self catering cottages in Sennen, overlooking Whitesands Bay and only 5 minutes walk away from the beach.
Itinerary (subject to change)
Day 1 Arrive at our accommodation and settle in. There will be the option of a short walk along the coast path towards Land’s End before dinner.
Day 2 Today we head to the gorgeous coastal village of Mousehole where we meet local guide Elaine. Her family have lived here for generations, with strong connections to the RNLI, so it is a truly fascinating insight into village life. Next we take an optional boat tour to explore the local wildlife of the area. We then head to Newlyn to meet Jeanette for a tour of this lovely town.
Day 3 After breakfast, we drive to nearby Sancreed Beacon for a stunning circular walk. We take in Sancreed Holy Well, Carn Euny stone age village, Carn Euny Holy Well, the old China Clay Works at Tredinney Common, Bartinney Downs and Castle, Caer Bran Hillfort, Tony’s Wood, and Sancreed Beacon with fabulous views of Mount’s Bay.
Day 4 Today we take the open top bus to St Ives, along the beautiful north Cornish coast. Once in St Ives, we will meet our guide and explore the highlights of this captivating town, with a focus on the fishing folk and artists who made it their home. After lunch, there will be an option to join Helen for a short walk along the coast or spending some time at leisure exploring St Ives before catching the train back to Penzance. We will eat in town before heading back to the cottage.
Day 5 Today, we’ll be focussing on the mining industry which was so important to the Cornish economy. We’ll take the bus towards St Just and will continue our journey on foot along the coast, through Cape Cornwall and the Kenidjack Valley to the Botallack and Levant Mines. We’ll spend some time exploring this fascinating area before heading on to Geevor Tin Mine Museum.
Day 6 Departure day and we make the most of our time by heading to Penzance for a 2 hour tour with Anna before the journey home.
