Southwold and the Suffolk Coast 2 Grade: Leisurely
Southwold and the surrounding area is a truly magical location with much to attract the walker and nature lover. Our holiday will take in the beautiful Suffolk Coast with visits to Southwold where we are based plus Walberswick, Dunwich, Aldeburgh and Orford Ness. Each place offers something different making for an interesting and varied stay.
Southwold itself is a genteel seaside resort, known as the Jewel in the Crown of East Suffolk resorts. With its award-winning beach, recently renovated pier, white-washed lighthouse and colourful beach huts, it is a truly wonderful base from which to explore the surrounding area. From here, we will head to Aldeburgh whose long sand and shingle beach is home to a number of quirky historic buildings as well as Maggi Hambling’s controversial sculpture, The Scallop.
On one day, we will take the short ferry ride across to Orford Ness, a spit of land which is known for its military history as well as being an important site for nature conservation. It has an eerie and mysterious feel about it and is well worth a visit.
During our stay we will also head to Dunwich, the lost city of England. Once the capital of the Kingdom of the East Angles, Dunwich was ravaged by sea surges and there are few clues to its former size and importance. There is an impressive coastal heath nearby and we may hear the enthralling sound of stags roaring during the breeding season.
We will also visit nearby Walberswick, a quaint seaside village with unspoilt dunes within walking distance of our accommodation. And perhaps we will head inland at some point to discover the charming market town of Saxmundham with its historic buildings and a fine array of independent shops.
We will stay in a large Edwardian house only metres from the coast and the heart of Southwold. Breakfast and lunch are provided on a help yourself basis and 2 evening meals will be provided at the accommodation. On the other nights we will eat out locally as a group.
If you would like to extend your stay then 1 or 2 additional nights are available at the end of the holiday on a B&B basis. No activities are provided but there is plenty to do and see. Extra nights are £49 per person per night.
