Mam Tor Classic Peak District Grade: Low Moderate
Mam Tor is a classic Peak District destination with a fascinating history and some of the best views of the National Park. The walk up to the top takes in Odin Mine with its remnants of the area’s industrial history and the famous broken road, a reminder that this peak is called Shivering Mountain for good reason.
Mam Tor summit is the site of a Bronze Age burial ground and an Iron Age hillfort, chosen for its wide reaching views over the contrasting landscapes offered by the Dark and White Peak. From Mam Tor, we will walk along the skyline before descending along the former coffin trail back to Castleton where there are many cafes, shops and pubs and an excellent National Park Visitor Centre.
Grade: Low Moderate. The walk is 5 miles with 420 metres of ascent taken at a leisurely pace in order to enjoy the surroundings to the full. The walk is on footpaths and some quiet, minor roads.
