Improvers / Silver Navigation Course (NNAS)
This is a 2 day course designed to improve your map reading and learn, or improve, your compass skills. You will learn how to use the map and compass to help you in good and bad visibility. You don’t need to have used a compass before as the course will take you through everything step by step. We will walk between 5 and 8 miles each day at a leisurely pace, practising using a map and compass in a moorland environment. Compasses can be borrowed for the course (£10 returnable deposit).
“I really enjoyed the Silver Navigation course. My aim in doing it was to feel more confident when walking on my own in unfamiliar areas and not only did I achieve this but it was great fun as well.Things started easily (coffee and finding out what we knew, followed by pacing and simple map-reading) and then progressed over the course of the two days. There was plenty of time to practise skills and plenty of map-reading information and discussion which was both interesting and helpful. Clare is a very good teacher, her explanations are clear, she went over the things we needed reminding about and when we weren’t sure what to do, encouraged us to come up with solutions and try them out to see how they worked. I would thoroughly recommend this course.” Rose
“Wonderful! Clare was a great navigation teacher- patient, kind and knowledgeable about the area. We had plenty of time to practice what we learnt in the classroom out on the moors, and I am left feeling a much more confident hiker. Passed my silver level- thanks again Clare, see you next time for Gold!” Elisabeth
